一场正式的比赛，在裁判员和运动员进入场地后，都会有各自相应的准备。按照羽毛球规则17.2的规定：临场裁判员主持一场比赛并管理该比赛的场地及其邻域(The umpire，where appointed．shall be in charge of the match, the courtand its immediate surrounds)。其邻近( immediate surrounds)是指羽毛球场地边线( side lines)和端线(boundaryines)之外两米以内的范围。
   

　　羽毛球的裁判员进入比赛场地(enterthe court)之后，就要开始进入主持和管理(in charge of)该场比赛(the match)的角色了。裁判员首先要主持挑边( conduct the toss)，这时他会对双方运动员说：  “ let's have a toss first（我们先来挑边吧）。”

 

　　然后将挑边的结果告知负责翻分的记分员，检查司线员的位置是否合适以及知会发球裁判员谁是首发球员( first sever)。一般来说，从进场直至裁判员宣布比赛开始，这之间有两到三分钟，有些比赛，赛前裁判长会跟裁判员说明。如果有电视转播，则有可能是由电视台的人给出开始的信号。每个赛事如何操作，都会在赛前由裁判长与相关人员沟通好，布置执行。下面我们来看看在这段时间内，裁判员与各方人员是如何进行沟通的。

　　Umpire:(ask A)  Which color do youprefer?. Red or yellow?

　　裁判员：（问A）你要什么颜色？红还是黄色？
 

　　PlayerA:either of them is Ok for me.
 

　　遣动员A:哪个都行。
 

　　Umpire: So you take red, and you  ( tophyerB)will take the yellow.
 

　　裁判员：那你就红的吧，（对B说）你就要黄色的了。
 

　　PlayerB：no objection.
 

　　运动员B:同意。
 

　　Umpire:  (after tossing)  lt's yellow.
 

　　Player B, what'S your choice?
 

　　裁判员：（抛了挑边器后）黄色，B你选什么？
 

　　Player B:1 would choose the right end of
 

　　Player A:1'd like to serve first.
 

　　运动员A：我要发球。
 

　　Umpire: Done.
 

　　裁判员：好，就这样。( ifit is a double match, the umpire have toask)（如果是双打，裁判员则要问）
 

　　Umpire: Ok, which of you is the first server?.
 

　　裁判员：好的，你们两个谁先发球？
 

　　Player C:lt'S me. Zhang Jing.
 

　　运动员C:我，张静。
 

　　Umpire:  (toward the other party)  andwho will receive first?
 

　　裁判员：（对另一方）你们谁先接发球？
 

　　Player A: the girl, Jane Smith.
 

　　遣动员A：这个女孩，简·史密斯。
 

　　(Then the umpire toward the scorer)  （然后裁判员走向计分员告诉他）
 

　　Umpire: England will be on my right andZhang Jing is the first server, and JaneSmith is the first receiver.
 

　　裁判员：在我右边的是英格兰队员，张静先发球，简先接发球。
 

　　( When the umpire get everything ready)

　　Umpire: Players, please get ready for thematch.
 

　　裁判员：运动员，请做好比赛准备。
